SUV(Sports Utility Vehicle) is a vehicle which is capable of off-roading
i.e. driving it on rough terrain as an adventures sports. It is mostly
used where the roads are rough and a rugged and spacious vehicle is required. In Indian market, a SUV is also linked with aggressive road
presence, status symbol, bullying other vehicle(which is not a good use
of it) and higher seating position.
As the the global exposure in
automotive industry is already on its best, vehicles with newer
technology are launching one after other. In this chain Ford Ecosport
and Renault duster were launched followed by Hyundai Creta and Maruti
Suzuki s-cross. As these vehicles are doing good in the market, other
companies are also in their way to launch similar products. These vehicles
are redefining SUV segment in India, for now they are termed to be a
Compact SUV/Crossover(SUV + Car)/Urban SUV/Soft-roader. Though both types of vehicles are enjoying there market share, some buyers often get confused in making a choice."How can it be a SUV if it do not even have a chassis or is not a 7 seater?", You may encounter this question. Here I will explain basic differences they carry, helping you to pick your next ride.
Body-On-Frame/ Ladder chassis SUV
It is a traditional and well proven body style of a SUV (Trucks and Buses are also made on Body on frame design). A thick, heavy and strong metal frame, usually a ladder shaped, is made. It is therefore termed as 'ladder chassis'
On this frame the engine, transmission and the body of the vehicle is placed and joined. Hence it is made of two parts, the body and the chassis. The metal frame carry the weight of the engine and body. This is a economical and relatively easier way to manufacture the vehicle for the companies. Scorpio, Safari, Pajero, Endevour, Bolero, Fortuner are Body on Frame SUV.
Goods :
Monocoque is a modern and more scientific design. It is the same design used by cars(hatchback and sedan). The complete body is design in such a manner that the body itself becomes capable to carry the weight of itself and the wight of engine+passengers+luggage.
The body is made strong at key points where the body encounter pressure more, either from the weight or from the base via wheels and suspensions. This makes it a one piece body which is more rigid. This design takes lots of R&D hence is costlier and relatively tough to make.
